Storyline -
After his son fails to bring him to the circus, an elderly Jacob Jankowski (Hal Holbrook), decides to leave his elder-care facility and walk to see the spec by himself. While there he is found by two circus workers, who insist on returning him home. Jacob tells them that he was present for the greatest circus disaster of all time. One of the workers is intrigued, and decides to listen to his story.
There is a flashback to 1931, where a 23-year-old Jacob (Robert Pattinson) is a Cornell drop out. While taking his final exam, he is informed that his parents have been killed in a car crash, with his father leaving a huge debt. The bank forecloses Jacob's home, leaving him homeless. Feeling like there is nothing else for him, he chances upon the Benzini Brothers circus and stows away on the train. He sees a beautiful young woman, Marlena (Reese Witherspoon), performing with the horses, and is instantly captivated. Having snuck his way onto the circus train, he is soon summoned to August (Christoph Waltz), the circus owner. August orders him thrown off, until he discovers that Jacob studied veterinary science at Cornell and has noticed a problem with Silver, the starring horse of the show. He agrees to hire him as a vet for the circus animals. The next day, Jacob diagnoses Silver with laminitis, which is causing him to limp and leaving him in a great deal of pain. When he suggests to August that Silver should be put to sleep, August refuses and demands that Jacob make him ready for the next show. Marlena is visibly upset. Jacob steals a gun and shoots the horse in the head.
When August finds out he is furious and he threatens to throw Jacob off the train, but he keeps Jacob alive so that he can be a scapegoat; without a star attraction there could be fall in ticket sales, and the men won't be paid as a result.Soon after, August reveals the new starring act that he has purchased; a 53-year-old elephant named Rosie. August asks Jacob to be Rosie's trainer and carer. Jacob admits to him that he never graduated from Cornell, making him unqualified as a vet. August shrugs it off, hiring him anyway. August becomes intoxicated and goes to bed, leaving Marlena and Jacob to share a dance together.
Jacob is given a bullhook with which to train Rosie, but is reluctant to use it. He attempts to train her without it, but, during a show, August hits her with it and she stampedes out of the stadium, rearing and nearly throwing Marlena from her back. When Jacob retrieves Rosie from the town and returns her to her cart, August badly beats her with the bullhook. He expresses remorse afterwards when Jacob confronts him, and is upset that Marlena refuses to talk to him.Marlena and August reconcile and the three of them form a guarded relationship. Jacob gradually realises that he is in love with Marlena. He also befriends fellow circus employees, including Camel (Jim Norton) and Walter (Mark Povinelli), a dwarf, who has a Jack Russell terrier named Queenie.
By accident, Jacob learns Rosie's secret - the commands she has learnt are all in Polish. August is thrilled and the circus booms in business. August takes Marlena and Jacob out to celebrate, but police raid the bar, which is serving alcohol illegally. In the confusion, Marlena and Jacob lose August. They share a kiss, but Marlena leaves, afterwards denying that it ever happened.Camel falls ill due to drinking Jamaican ginger extract for many years, and is left unable to move his legs. Jacob realises that Camel will not have much time left, and will be 'red-lighted' (referring to the practice of throwing circus workers off a moving train as either punishment or as severance from the circus to avoid paying wages), when he is discovered. Camel's son lives in a nearby town where the circus is performing in a few weeks, so they decide to hide him until then.
Meanwhile, August's suspicions about Marlena and Jacob reach a peak, and he hits Marlena. Jacob retaliates and is fired from the circus, narrowly escaping with his life. He and Marlena jump from the train and go to a hotel, making plans for Jacob to finish his degree so they can both join the Ringling Brothers circus. They make love together, but, before they can leave August and his men find them, beating Jacob unconscious and kidnapping Marlena. Jacob returns to the circus to find her, to discover that Camel and Walter have been red-lighted, killing them both on sharp rocks. Seething with rage and despair, Jacob takes a knife and breaks into Marlena and August's cart, intending to kill a sleeping August. However he finds that he cannot bring himself to do it.
The next morning, Marlena finds Jacob sleeping with Queenie in his old room. He tells her that during the performance they will together escape. However, some of the red-lighted men return and release all the animals in revenge. Chaos ensues, as circus performers and audience members are chased from the arena by the lions and bears.August spots Jacob in the crowd, and attempts to kill him. Marlena grabs the bullhook and hits him with it, making him back off of Jacob. However, he chases her and eventually pins her to the ground, attempting to suffocate her with the bullhook. Rosie spots Marlena in distress and kills August.
The circus is shut down after the disaster. The current day Jacob reveals that he eventually qualified as a vet, and he and Marlena joined another circus, bringing Rosie and Queenie with them. They went on to have five children, and Rosie and Marlena have both now passed away. He asks the current circus owner if he can have a job selling tickets and travel with them, and the owner agrees. Jacob believes that he has finally returned home.
