50/50 is a 2011 comedy-drama film directed by Jonathan Levine, written by Will Reiser, and starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Seth Rogen. The film is loosely based on the life of screenwriter Will Reiser.
Storyline -
Adam Learner (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) is a 27-year old journalist with a good-looking girlfriend, Rachael (Bryce Dallas Howard). His best friend and co-worker Kyle (Seth Rogen) disapproves of Rachael; Kyle has disliked every girlfriend Adam has had so far.Adam discovers he has a rare cancer and must undergo chemotherapy. The doctor gives Adam the phone number of a hospital therapist. Adam tells his girlfriend about the cancer and she says she will take care of him. Adam tells his parents; his mother Diane (Anjelica Huston) is appalled and wants to move in with him, his father has Alzheimer's disease and does not understand.
Adam starts going to the young and inexperienced therapist, Katie McCay (Anna Kendrick), but is annoyed by her therapy techniques. Adam befriends Alan (Philip Baker Hall) and Mitch (Matt Frewer), two older chemo patients.Kyle uses Adam's illness to pick up girls, which annoys Adam. On a date, Kyle sees Rachael kissing another man. Adam is not sure how to deal with this, but Kyle kicks Rachael out of Adam's house.Exhausted after a chemotherapy session, Adam runs into Katie, who gives him a ride home; they have an awkward conversation about Adam's breakup with Rachael, and Katie's own breakup. The floor of the car is full of trash; Adam forces Katie to stop the car and cleans it out, and the two form a somewhat awkward friendship.Rachael appears at Adam's house to retrieve her belongings. She complains about being unhappy and tries to restart the relationship, but Adam tells her, "Get the fuck off my porch." Adam and Kyle celebrate.
At the next chemotherapy session, Alan tells Adam that Mitch died the night before. Adam decides he also has no chance of survival. At the next appointment Adam is told that he will need to have surgery and if it fails there is no hope. Adam has one last therapy session with Katie: he says he is sure he will die, and walks out.Increasingly nervous, Adam goes out drinking with Kyle, but becomes angry. Adam asks to drive Kyle's car (although he has no license). After a short but wild ride, Adam stops the car and pushes Kyle out, breaking down into screaming. He calls Katie, admits all his problems, and says he wishes Katie was his girlfriend. Adam then takes Kyle home, where he discovers a book on how to support a cancer patient; Adam realizes how kind Kyle has been.
Kyle, Katie and Adam's parents wait after Adam's surgery. The doctor tells them the healing will be long, but Adam will survive.Six months later, Kyle is putting a dressing on Adam's scar when Katie arrives. Kyle comments that "she's cool", and leaves. Katie and Adam make small talk. Katie asks "Now what?" Adam does not reply, just smiles.
