Storyline -

The Scottish King Fergus of DunBroch presents his young daughter Merida with a bow and arrow for her birthday, much to the discomfort of Merida's mother, Queen Elinor. During their outing, Merida briefly encounters a will-o'-the-wisp before returning to her parents as a giant demon bear named Mor'du attacks the family. Elinor and Merida escape while Fergus fights off the bear alongside his men at the cost of his left leg. Years later, Elinor, who has since given birth to identical triplet boys, teaches Merida her traditions as a princess, all the while steadily becoming distant with her daughter due to Merida's rebellious nature and desire to explore the kingdom on her horse, Angus. She discovers that she is to be married to one of the first born sons from the clans in alliance with her father's: Macintosh, MacGuffin, and Dingwall. Despite Elinor telling her a story of a king's wayward son who broke ties with his three brothers and brought an end to their kingdom, Merida is dissatisfied with the arranged marriage.

When the clan leaders arrive to present their first-born sons to compete for Merida's hand, her mother states that first-borns may compete and that Merida can choose what skill they will be competing with. Merida chooses archery. When Lord Dingwall's son wins by accident, Merida decides to shoots the targets over Elinor's objections. The two have a falling out, resulting in Merida destroying a sewn tapestry depicting the family and Elinor throwing her bow into the fireplace. As Merida runs away, Elinor realizes her mistake. Fleeing to the forest, Merida encounters will-o'-the-wisps that leads her to an elderly witch's hut. Though the witch tries to sell herself off as a simple wood carver despite her animated broom and talking crow, Merida sees through her ruse before the witch attempts to have her leave. But when Merida offers her pendant for all of the witch's wood works, she accepts while agreeing to give her a spell that will change Elinor as well as Merida's fate. While briefly mentioning that she made such a spell before for another, the witch conjures a small cake for Merida to give to her mother.

In DunBroch, Merida gives Elinor the cake and is shocked to find her mother is transformed into a bear. With the help of the triplets, Merida and Elinor sneak out of the castle past Fergus and the celebrating clans. The pair return to the witch's cottage, finding it empty as the witch left to gather new supplies. Through a potion-controlled automated message, Merida discovers that the spell will be permanent unless undone by the second sunrise. The witch leaves Merida a riddle, mentioning that a bond must be repaired. The next morning, while she and Elinor begin to reconcile, Merida realizes that her mother is becoming more like a bear when she nearly mauls Merida. Following the wisps to the ruins of an old castle, Merida ends up in the throne room where she finds a damaged stone engraving with three brothers; a fourth brother had been cut off. Putting two and two together, Merida realizes that her mother's story occurred and that the wayward brother's visit to the witch resulted in his transformation into Mor'du.

Merida and Elinor return to DunBroch to restore the family tapestry, but find Fergus and the lords on the verge of war. Merida brings the four factions back together using her father's war stories and declares that the sons should choose their own brides. The lords accept the proposal after their sons admit their feelings towards the arranged marriage. While Merida and Elinor sneak into the tapestry room, Fergus goes to his bed chambers to tell Elinor about what is going on, but mistakes her for dead and bursts into the tapestry room, finding Merida and Elinor. When Elinor attacks both Merida and Fergus, she flees. Fergus detains Merida in the room and sets off with the lords to capture and kill the bear. With the help of her brothers, who turned into cubs after eating what remained of the cake, Merida is freed and proceeds to sew together the tapestry. They ride after Fergus with the wisps guiding them to him, arriving as he and the others restrain Elinor. Merida defends Elinor by confronting and defeating Fergus, before Mor'du attacks the party.

When the bear lunges for Merida, Elinor breaks free to protect her daughter and battles Mor'du. Elinor tricks Mor'du into attacking a weakened stone pillar, which eventually collapses onto and kills the demon bear. This releases the spirit of the wayward brother from the witch's spell and he turns into a wisp and joins the others. Though Merida puts the repaired tapestry on top of her wounded mother, Elinor shows no signs of returning to normal as the sun starts to rise and she begins to permanently become a bear. Merida then bursts into tears and admits that it was all her fault and that she wants her mother back. The rift is mended, and Elinor and the boys return to human form. Sometime later, the clans rekindle their own bonds and go their separate ways, but Merida's brothers have stowed away on Macintosh's ship, and Fergus chases after them and the ship. Merida and Elinor ride their horses through Scotland, both having changed for the better. In a post-credits scene, one of the guards in front of the castle is awakened by the witch's crow asking him to sign for delivery of the wooden sculptures Merida had bought from the witch.
